Smoke Detectors:

Types, Maintenance & What Calgary Homeowners Should Know

Smoke detectors are one of the most important safety devices in your home, but many homeowners don’t realize they need regular maintenance and replacement.

At Exquisite Electric, we always remind homeowners that checking your smoke detectors should be part of your routine, especially when the clocks change.

Types of Smoke Detectors

Not all smoke detectors are the same. Here are the most common types you’ll find in homes:

Battery-Only Smoke Detectors (10-Year Sealed Battery)

These units are powered entirely by a sealed lithium battery that lasts up to 10 years. There’s no battery replacement required. Once it reaches its expiry date, the entire unit needs to be replaced.

Hardwired Smoke Detectors

These are connected directly to your home’s electrical system and often include a backup battery. They’re reliable and commonly found in newer homes.

Smart Smoke Detectors

Smart units (like Nest-style detectors) offer additional features like:

  • App notifications when alarms go off
  • Self-testing features
  • Battery alerts

These still require battery changes (typically every 6 months) and should be monitored just like traditional units.

How Long Do Smoke Detectors Last?

How Long Do Smoke Detectors Last?

Most smoke detectors have a lifespan of 10 years
You can find this by:
  • ✅ Checking the expiry date on the side.

  • ✅ Looking for the manufacturing date on the back.

  • ✅ Example: If your unit says 2020, it should be replaced by 2030.

How to Remove or Replace a Smoke Detector

Most detectors are easy to remove:
  • ✅ Twist left (“lefty loosey”) to take it down.

  • ✅ Twist right to reinstall.

  • ✅ Open battery compartment (if applicable).

  • ✅ Replace unit if expired

When Should You Check Them?

You should:
  • ✅ Test monthly (ideal).

  • ✅ At minimum, check them when you change your clocks.

  • ✅ Replace batteries every 6 months (if applicable)

Pro Tip Most Homeowners Miss

A lot of people only check the battery—but don’t realize the entire unit expires.

Even if your detector is beeping or seems to work, if it’s over 10 years old, it needs to be replaced.
